Press this point for allergy symptoms
The most popular acupressure points for allergies are located on the face, but if you don’t feel like poking around up there, here’s one on your ankle.
Spleen 5 is often used to treat allergies because of its effectiveness at resolving what’s known in acupuncture as Dampness.
Dampness in the body creates fixed, heavy obstructions. When Dampness accumulates, it can turn into Phlegm, which is not exactly but close enough to the phlegm we’re all familiar with and afraid of during allergy season. Sinus headaches, runny and stuffy noses, and itchy eyes, anyone?
Spleen 5 is a little hard to show in a photo, so to find it, first locate your medial malleolus. That’s the prominent bone on the inside of your ankle.
Place your finger at the center of that bone, then trace your finger so that it dips just below the bone and then go to the distal—toward to toes—edge of the bone. So if you’re standing up and looking down at your inner ankle, Spleen 5 is located in the lower right corner of your medial malleolus bone.
Some acupuncture traditions suggest that Spleen 5 for allergy symptoms is more effective on the left side. I’m not sure if that’s true, but start by trying it on the left. If you’re not seeing results, try pressing the point on both sides.
Spleen 5 is pretty easy to access bilaterally when you’re sitting cross-legged. That position comfortably exposes the inner ankle and lets you access the point with your thumb or index finger. Apply firm pressure—this spot is typically not tender—and hold for 1-2 minutes while remembering to breathe.
